Craiglockhart HillsThe hills of Craiglockhart and Corstorphine stand as sentinels guarding the western approach of Greater Edinburgh. They rise on either side of the fruitful valley, in which are laid the great lines of communication leading through the centre of Scotland to Glasgow. The twin hills of Craiglockhart are not so impressive in bulk or in height as those which have just been described; but they are interesting formations, and evidence has recently been forthcoming, in the discovery of prehistoric relics, that they were amongst the earliest inhabited areas in this region. During World War I, when gun emplacements were being prepared, excavations showed traces of early primitive dwellings on the summit of Wester Craiglockhart Hill. The hill lies a little out of the ordinary traffic routes. Strangers who may find their way to the summit may be puzzled to discover carefully laid out greens and driving tees; and they will have evidence that whether or not Scotsmen take their pleasures sadly, they at least take them strenuously. |
