"Refused a return of an item which was not suitable for my camera"

I bought two items at the Corstorphine store today in Edinburgh. One of the items was a 4 GB SD card which on trying out on my camera it said it was not suitable. I am 85 years of age and know little about new technology. The card I had been using was a 250MB card which I showed to the salesman and I said I was looking for something a bit bigger but not too big. The smallest size they had in store was the 4GB prem SDHC which he told me would hold 16 times the one I was using. I bought it but found out it was not suitable for my camera. I phoned Customer services in Essex who contacted the Edinburgh store to see if I could return it. The answer was "no".

I am extremely upset and annoyed about this and I was told this was the policy of the firm not to accept returns unless the item was faulty. Is this in keeping with the law as the item is not fit for use as far as ii am concerned?

I have bought many items from this store over the years and found them helpful but not on this occasion.
